'Tween'
Market Seeks Britney Replacement
Wanted: Role model, hip and attractive enough to appeal to 7- to
14-year-olds with increasingly adult tastes.
A caveat: Cannot be so sexy or with so much attitude that parents will
protest. No drugs, not too much bare flesh and, ideally, the successful
candidate will never grow up.
That is the delicate recruiting tightrope being walked by companies in
search of young stars to market everything from cosmetics to clothes and cell
phones to the increasingly powerful "tween" market.
These kids have greater influence over family buying decisions, more money
of their own and a broader range of interests than previous generations. There
are also more of them, because many are the grandchildren of baby boomers.
Some marketing estimates put their buying power in the United States alone
at $300 billion a year -- a lot of money to miss out on if you get the tone of
a campaign wrong or go with the wrong role model.
"The potential is huge for marketers and once they (tweens) obtain
more money, it's only going to get bigger," said Cynthia Engelke of Youth
Intelligence, a youth marketing research firm in New York City.
It's not that there isn't a wider choice of young stars than ever before,
particularly among actresses and singers. For example, the cover of Vanity
Fair's latest issue features nine female celebrities under the headline
"It's Totally Raining Teens!" The magazine, which usually showcases
more mature talent, gushes that, on the cultural and financial fronts, now
more than ever, it is prime time for teen-agers.
BRITNEY SPEARS -- YESTERDAY'S STAR
But what worked last year may not work this year. A prime example of that
is the fading appeal of pop star Britney Spears among tweens.
Spears quickly went from sassy songstress touting lucrative endorsement
deals with Pepsi, AOL and Skechers footwear -- and earning $39.2 million in 2002, according to Forbes magazine --
to being seen as yesterday's star at the ripe old age of 21. Teenmag.com, the
online version of Teen Magazine, said 54 percent of the 10- to 15 age group
who responded to a poll in May, chose the description "so over" to
describe Spears.
Some marketing experts say that Spears was overexposed and subsequently
seen as pushing products rather than being creative. Contrary to popular myth,
her overtly sexual image may also have contributed to her decline as a role
model.
"Tweens began to realize that she's too commercial, not to mention too
sexually charged," said Alicia Kolski, vice president of Amp Insights,
the tween research arm of Alloy Marketing and Promotions. "Tweens are
listening to artists for their talent or skill more so than for what they
wear."
Parents still have a great influence over tweens and they can often be
conservative. "We have them look through magazines and select what they
think is for them and what's not," she said. "Things that are too
sexy -- they tend to shy away from. They are just not comfortable."
Spears and young pop star Christina Aguilera also illustrate another
problem. As teen-age stars grow up, they may start to appeal more to an adult
market.
Among the most successful promoters to tweens are those who take the
audience through their childhood. The most extreme example of that are the
17-year-old twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who began their entertainment
careers when they were babies. In the process, they have created a
multimillion-dollar entertainment and consumer products empire, with estimates
of their net worth at $300 million combined.
MOSTLY WHOLESOME OLSENS
The Olsens, who have maintained a mostly wholesome image, have their
fingers in about 60 product categories, including a fashion and accessories
line, a lifestyle magazine, movies, video games, a TV sitcom and fashion
dolls.
"Everything was based on what they thought was appropriate,"
Michael Pagnotta, a spokesman for the Olsens' company Dualstar Entertainment
Group said, recalling their decision to avoid shirts that exposed their
navels.
Among the stars who might be bets to compete with the Olsens' dominance in
the tween market is Hilary Duff, the 15-year-old star of the "Lizzie
McGuire" movie and TV series.
Duff not only has the Olsens' natural image, but also her character
displays the kind of angst that teens going through adolescence can identify
with as real, Engelke said. Duff has her own line of products -- Stuff by
Hilary Duff, set to hit stores next year, two movies, and the release in
September of her debut CD "Metamorphosis."

Britney
Out, Aniston New Top Forbes Celebrity
Pop princess Britney Spears learned on Thursday that fame
can be fleeting as she disappeared from this year's Forbes Top 100 Celebrity
List after last year's No. 1 spot.
Replacing her at the top is Jennifer Aniston, one of TV's
"Friends" stars, who earned $35 million last year and appeared on
more magazine covers than any other celebrity.
Jennifer "J-Lo" Lopez and Ben Affleck emerged as
Hollywood's hottest new power couple, occupying the fifth and seventh spots on
the list, with a combined income of $65 million.
It has not been a good year for Spears, who hit it big in
1999 with "Oops!..I Did it Again." She has had a string of bad press
recently, as her much publicized relationship with Justin Timberlake of N'Sync
went sour; her movie "Crossroads," was less than successful.
She was also photographed flipping off the paparazzi in
Mexico after refusing to go on stage in a rain storm, while photos in the New
York Post of her smoking also worked to tarnish her good-girl image.
"Good press or bad press, all press is equal in our
eyes," said Peter Kafka, an editor at Forbes, the business magazine that
compiled the list, which takes into consideration earnings, press clippings,
radio and TV coverage and web hits.
"By dollar value, Britney did not have a big album or a
big tour, the proponents that usually land celebrities on the list," said
Kafka.
Rappers Eminem and Dr. Dre take the number 2 slot this year,
also earning $35 million, but with nearly 2 million web hits. Golfer Tiger
Woods slipped from 2 to 3, while earning $78 million -- $9 million more than
last year.
Kafka said Aniston, whose husband, Brad Pitt, did not make
the list, was a bit of a surprise. "Aniston's marriage may have helped to
propel her to 13 covers, but she is still one of the highest paid actresses in
Hollywood," he said.
Aniston's female "Friends," Lisa Kudrow (30) and
Courteney Cox (41) made the list, but only one male co-star, Matthew Perry
(25).
"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, catapulted
from 34 in 2002 to 15 this year amid anticipation about the latest book in the
children's series. Rowling's earnings increased by about $90 million, up from
$41.8 million.
While golfer Woods was by far the most powerful sports
celebrity, basketball legend Michael Jordan was 13 with motor racing's Michael
Schumacher at 19. Soccer star David Beckham entered the list at 56, but
without Spice Girl wife Victoria.
Rounding out the top ten were movie director Steven
Spielberg (4), ex-Beatle Paul McCartney (6), Oprah Winfrey (8), Tom Hanks (9)
and The Rolling Stones (10).

The Price of Touring
Most people think artists make huge
amounts of money from touring all around the world. However, recently I just
learned that, this is not the case at all. According to Forbes, in an article
by Michael Freedman, I discovered that while Britney's tour in 2002 may have
grossed $30 million, Britney, herself, only bagged in about $10 million.
You're probably asking "what happened to the other $20 million?,"
well the rest of the money went to pay for the costs of her band, hotel,
transportation, crew and production.
Now that sure explains the 50 plus dollar price tag on a ticket to one of her
concerts.
