Britney Says 'I'm Single' And 'I Do' In TV Wedding Farce
As reported by USA Today, Britney Spears did tell a British television host she's single -- but then again, she also told him, "I do."

The pop star had a bit of fun with the rumors that have swirled about her relationship with Justin Timberlake during her time on "The Big Breakfast," declaring herself single, accepting a marriage proposal from host Richard Bacon and even staging a mock quickie wedding -- all within five minutes of screen time.

USA Today ran Spears' declaration of singlehood as confirmation that her relationship with Timberlake was over, but the quote came as part of the setup for the planned phony marriage skit, which was taped earlier but aired Wednesday morning (March 27).

"Now I know that you don't want to talk about your relationship, that's fair enough. I'm not going to ask because we know what's going on in the press, but can I ask, are you single at the moment or not?" Bacon asked Spears at the onset of the interview. "If you don't want to talk about anything at all, you can just say, 'I don't wanna say.'"

"I'm single, right now," Spears responded with a mischievous gleam in her eye.

The two bantered for a while about a Sunday People article in which Spears said she thought Bacon was cute and would like to meet him. "With that in mind," Bacon asked, getting down on one knee, "Britney Spears, light of my life, will you make me the happiest man in the world by becoming my wife?" Bacon then produced an engagement ring.

"This is a TV show, yes I will," she said, as he slipped the ring on her finger. "I can't wait to call my mom and tell her."

Getting one of the world's biggest pop stars to agree to marry him wasn't enough for Bacon, though -- he wanted to seal the deal then and there. "I was thinking of making it quite a short engagement," he said, pointing out a Methodist minister who had been sitting across from them the whole time but only then became visible to the camera. Spears feigned surprise as the vicar showed them two already-prepared marriage certificate applications.

"Whoa, this is like for real. Oh my gosh," Spears exclaimed. "Where am I supposed to sign? This is pretend, right?"

Bacon said nothing, and she signed regardless. "You are now Britney Bacon," he said, then he kissed her on the cheek as a bouquet of flowers was tossed to her by someone off-camera.

"I'm married, mom!" she exclaimed to the camera. "Let's go on our honeymoon. Let's leave now and go to Vegas, baby!"

Bacon had another locale in mind for the honeymoon, a "lodge 'round the corner," which the optimistic host said he had already booked. "Obviously, we're now together for life," he reminded her.

"Um, yeah, OK," she said, laughing.

As soon as the cameras stopped rolling, her handlers took back the marriage certificate application, underscoring that the transaction was just a joke. As for Mr. Spears, one step he skipped was signing a prenuptial agreement -- smart thinking since he's about to be out of a job. "The Big Breakfast," after a 10-year run, airs its last episode on Friday.

Britney 'Thinks God Has A Long White Beard'
Britney Spears has revealed her views on heaven and the afterlife.

She thinks God has a "long, white beard" and "wanders around" in heaven.

She also believes you can meet up with your grandparents and everyone you love there.

Speaking to German entertainment magazine Cinema, she said: "Everyone is at peace and happy, and they all hop around from cloud to cloud.

"In heaven you can see your grandparents and everyone you loved once again. And an old man with a long white beard wanders around, that's God."

Britney also admitted that she has made hundreds of mistakes in the past but has learned from them.

"There are some things that I would like to cross out of the history books though," said Britney.

Britney On The Lycos Top 50 Week: 137

Kylie Gives Britney Some Lessons
Britney should take some lessons on how to treat fans from Kylie Minogue.

The pop princess won fans over by signing endless of autographs at the Capital FM Awards in central London on Thursday, March 28 the moment she popped out of her limo in a stylish Ungaro dress.

Asked about Britney booed by fans last week after ignoring them at her film premier, Kylie had this to say to the reporters.

"Britney has been in this business for a long time and she should know the ropes by now. Her PRs are going to get a big talking after that."

The experienced and older Kylie, who added two more awards at the ceremony to her mantelpiece, did sympathize with her chart rival.

"I've been there and it is really hard to get to everyone. Even if fans have been waiting for eight hours, you just can't do it."

But she pointed out that Britney is not entirely to be blamed.

"Her PRs have probably pushed her into going in the wrong direction. She has been misguided by them."

Fellow Aussie and former "Neighbours" colleague Natalie Imbruglia too echoed similar sentiments about Britney's attitude.

"She should have said hello to her fans. Perhaps she doesn't realize the protocol over here. But perhaps she was still upset about her boyfriend."

Britney Adopts 'Anti-Cancer' Health And Fitness Regime
Britney Spears, her mum and sister have all adopted a special anti-cancer diet and fitness programme.

The singer's mum Lynne says they have been "working out like crazy" and now feel "better than ever."

They were encouraged to adopt the new health regime by their doctor, as the Spears family has a history of cancer.

Writing in her Lynne's Corner diary on Britney's official website, www.britneyspears.com, Lynne says: "Britney, Jamie Lynn and I have made a belated New Year's resolution. We are all on an anti-cancer diet and fitness programme.

"My doctor encouraged me to do this. We have an extensive family history of cancer. There are some new diagnostic methods coming out in the next few years. I pray they have more answers soon."

Family Sues Over Fake Britney
An upstate New York family is suing a radio station over a fake Britney Spears appearance.

The family of Susan Santodonato is suing WMRV-FM of Endville, N.Y. and its parent companies for $1.2 billion.

Santodonato died in June 2000, a day after she fell in the station's parking lot. She had taken her then 11-year-old daughter to catch a glimpse of Spears at the station after an on-air personality advertised an appearance by the pop singer. The station only aired a prerecorded interview and had a look-alike come out of the station and dive into a limo.

The suit claims Santodonato was pushed or fell in the chaos. An autopsy concluded a blow to the head caused an abnormal heartbeat that lead to her death. Prosecutors reviewed the case but decided against filing criminal charges. The station's parent company has not commented on the suit.

Hollywood Star Persuaded Actor To Work With Britney
The actor who plays Britney Spears' love interest in her new film was persuaded to do the movie by another Hollywood star.

Anson Mount was working on a film with Robert De Niro when he was sent the script for Crossroads.

He says he was on set reading the script when De Niro asked him what he was up to.

"I told him 'I'm reading a script, it's this movie and Britney Spears is doing it and I'm not even sure I'm going to do it'" says Mount.

"He goes 'Why not? She's great!' and I said 'Here's the script' and he read his Lucy to my Ben".

"I can't remember which scene it was," says Mount. "But it wasn't the kissing scene!"

Britney & Justin (sigh)
Love is cruel, but it can be a cakewalk compared to the struggle to maintain the loyalty of fickle-hearted music fans. So if the romance between Britney Spears and 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake has, as reports indicate, cooled off, might their careers suffer accordingly? And which teen idol enjoys better long-term prospects at this point, single or otherwise?

Rob Roberts, program director of WHYI-FM, a Top 40 radio station in Miami, feels Spears and Timberlake's personal ties have had a positive symbiotic effect. ''Their star power has been amplified by each other,'' Roberts says. ''It's a publicist's dream relationship.''

But for Roberts, Timberlake, who has evolved into the focal point and driving creative force of 'N Sync, could be the better situated of the two former Mouseketeers. ''Justin has been a little more groundbreaking, while Britney has been a little more predictable,'' says Roberts.

Adds Chuck Taylor, senior editor at Billboard, '' 'N Sync turned towards R&B at just the right time. Just as pop music was falling on its face, 'N Sync started linking itself with cool hip-hop artists.'' Airplay Monitor editor Sean Ross concurs: '' 'N Sync has a surprise second career that nobody expected. And Britney is still depending heavily on co-writers and co-producers. If Justin can write his own stuff, that gives him more options.''

Roberts says Timberlake also has shown a precocious tendency to ''get the joke of being a pop star, and he's doing things to expand his horizons,'' such as appearing as a young Elton John in a well-received John video.

Ross stresses that Spears has not suffered much for her own forays into acting. ''It's not like Crossroads lost money,'' he says of her recent feature film debut. And although the film's theme, I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman, was an airplay disappointment, Taylor notes that ''her association with Pepsi has been extremely high-profile and positive. We're in an age when you can never judge talent over image, and Britney really has become an icon.''

Village Voice entertainment columnist Michael Musto feels a split won't hurt the couple. ''Traditionally, for teen idols, it's always been a better PR move to have them be unattached, so they can cater to all kinds of pubescent fantasies.''

He agrees that, with or without Timberlake, Spears may have a future in music -- and beyond it.

''Britney doesn't really have the smarts of a Madonna, but she has a wonderful personality and a lot of charisma,'' says Musto. ''I don't necessarily see her pursuing dramatic acting in movies -- she's not going to be the next Meryl Streep -- but if they do a remake of Grease with her and Ricky Martin, that could be a good vehicle. Or I think she'd be perfect for her own sitcom. I'm certainly not losing any sleep over her career right now.''

BRITNEY RULES THE WAVES
Dumped pop queen has a girls' day out.
BRITNEY Spears didn't look like a girl who had just been dumped as she enjoyed a sunshine break with friends yesterday.

Laughing and joking, the 20-year-old took to the seas off Florida's Miami Beach - determined to enjoy the heat and let the trials of the last few weeks melt away.

As the luxury boat sped across the water, the young superstar whipped off her top to catch even more sun.

And she didn't even mind when a flotilla of curious fans gave chase to get a better look.

Perhaps Britney was trying to make up for her spectacular snub last week. She was jeered by British fans for ignoring them at the London premiere of her new film Crossroads.

One beach-goer said yesterday: "Britney looked like she didn't have a care in the world.

"There were quite a few boats out and they all hovered around hers. But she didn't seem to care about the fans. She did give them the finger eventually though."

Britney certainly could do with the break.

Boyfriend Justin Timberlake dumped her by phone in the middle of her frantic world tour promoting Crossroads this month.

The devastated star flew home from Italy only to throw herself right back into her gruelling schedule.

Britney's Overprotected!
Britney's overprotective representatives say she did not mingle with fans at last night's U.K. premiere of "Crossroads" as it was considered a "security risk" to her.

The star was booed by her own fans for turning up an hour late and snubbing the thousands of fans, some of whom had traveled a long way and queued all day.

A spokesperson told British reporters that that it had been her "main priority" to meet the fans, but went on to say: "After assessing the situation on the ground, it was deemed a security risk by all involved for her to venture too far into the crowds."

Britney Says She's Single!
Are they on or off? A television interview in the U.K. confirms that Britney Spears has indeed split up with boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

Britney spilled the beans on television's "Big Breakfast" during the U.K. premiere of her movie "Crossroads." She told presenter Richard Bacon "I'm single right now." The cheeky presenter then went down on his knees and asked her to marry him and Britney played along jokingly with the gag.

Despite reminders to the media not to delve about her relationship, her much publicized virginity and the events of September 11 at her press conference, Britney did admit to a news reporter that she "is not in an intense relationship at the moment."

Kylie Says Britney Was Wrong To Shun Fans
Kylie Minogue says Britney Spears was wrong to ignore fans at her London premiere of Crossroads.

She says Britney has been around long enough to know she would cause a huge backlash.

Britney turned up late to the West End premiere and was marched past fans who had waited hours to see her.

Her representatives later said the singer could not mingle with the crowd for fears of security.

But Kylie told the Sun: "Britney should know the ropes by now. I'm sure everyone in her team will get a big talking to when they return home.

"She has caused a big fuss over nothing, but I'm not sure whether she deliberately intended to let her fans down."

Britney Booed In London
Britney Spears has come under heavy criticism from her fans at the U.K. premier of her movie "Crossroads."

Britney infuriated 4,000 fans who queued for hours at Leicester Square by turning up an hour late, dressed to the nines in a diamond necklace and backless, halter silver sequined dress surrounded by massive security guards and refusing to acknowledge them.

She barely gave the screaming fans a glance and disappeared to a balcony where she briefly emerged, waved and vanished again. As soon as it became clear that she was not interested in signing autographs and meeting fans, the boos and jeers rang out from the crowd.

Many newspapers pictured disappointed young fans in tears at the premier.

Jane Willis who traveled with her daughter Gemma, 11 told the Evening Standard:

"Gemma's crying her eyes out because she couldn't see a thing. We've been here for five hours. How does Britney expect people to go see her film if she can't be bothered to say hello to her fans?"

Another fan told a BBC reporter that she had created a poster and flew all the way from South Africa in the hope to meet her idol.

After the premiere, Britney was whisked away to the aftershow party. Was this how she planned to promote her film?

Her diva behavior is a stark contrast to superstar Tom Cruise who spent an hour talking to fans and signing autographs at his recent U.K. premiere of "Vanilla Sky."

Britney Says Singing In Her New Movie Was A Bonus
Britney Spears says she wasn't originally going to sing in her debut film Crossroads.

She says when she first agreed to appear in the film, her plan was to concentrate on her acting.

Crossroads opens in the UK on Good Friday.

Britney said: "We started to look at the script and I thought to spice it up a little bit, it'd be fun to put in a song or too."

She says she had lots of creative input in the film, including choosing a song by her boyfriend Justin Timberlake's band NSync for one scene.

"I thought it would be very funny for the three girls to be into NSync," Britney says. "But the character of Ben is totally over it, he just wants to listen to his rock music."

Britney says she decided to move into films because she thought the script to Crossroads was too good to miss. "I didn't feel any pressure to do the movie.

"It was something I wanted to do, I was on my third tour and I wanted to express myself in a different way, to challenge myself, to see it I could do it. The door was open and I just had to walk through."

Britney admits to being nervous about seeing herself on the big screen for the first time: "It was very nerve-wracking, but after a little while I lost the fact that it was me and I looked at myself as the character of Lucy."

Britney's younger sister, Jamie Lynn, also appears in the film as the younger version of her character Lucy, but Britney says there are no plans for the pair to work together again at the moment.

Britney has also filmed a cameo appearance for the new Austin Powers film. She says she had a lot of fun working with Mike Myers.

"It was very cool," she says. "I'm supposed to be very sexy throughout the scene - it was a lot of fun."
